The boats for the 1776 Christmas crossing of the river were hidden on the Pennsylvania side of Malta Island so they were not visible from the New Jersey side where the British were in control. The boats were moved to Knowles Cove above Taylorsville (now Washington Crossing) just before the crossing. The island has silted in and no longer exists.
